Operative Suite

Operating at a Higher Level.

The Operative Suite at Parkland is divided into three units—Operating Room (OR), Post Anesthesia Care unit (PACU), and the Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU). Together they create an efficient and professional environment, where nurses can use their skills to the fullest, and patients receive the best possible care.

Operating Room
Every year 14,500 cases pass through the 18 operating rooms at Parkland. Five of the rooms are state-of-the-art Endoscopic Suites, providing convenient access to advanced minimally invasive surgeries. The OR is staffed 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. At least 75% of the cases performed are multiple procedures, and about a third are unscheduled.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit
In the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, RNs and physicians collaborate with Licensed Vocational Nurses and ancillary personnel to provide patient-centered care. The nursing process and nursing diagnoses are used in PACU as the framework for patient-centered nursing interventions. This provides a systematic approach to problem identification, planning for problem resolution, and the evaluation of the plan’s effectiveness.

Ambulatory Surgery Unit
Over 6,800 patients a year receive care in the Parkland ASU. Here nurses can focus on the patient’s need for pre-operative and post-operative care with a special emphasis on patient/family education.
