Women's and Infant Services
From Birth to the Autumn of Life–
Caring for the Women and Children of Our Community.
Babies and mothers. Daughters and sons. In Parkland’s
Women and Children’s Services the family comes first with care
for patients in the first moments of life to the golden years of a life
well-lived. Women and Children’s Services is comprised of seven
departments, with care in all areas provided by interdisciplinary teams
including RNs, LVNs, and Advanced Practice Nurses.
Labor & Delivery
Triage
This unit is the hub of L&D activity and manages about 22,000 patients
a year. Here, Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioners and RNs assess
and triage obstetrical patients based on medical protocol.
Labor & Delivery
More babies are born each year at Parkland than any place else—about
15,000 babies every year. On a busy day you may find more that 20 women
in labor. That’s why L&D nurses here have numerous opportunities
to learn and gain experience in a variety of settings.
Nurseries
Once the babies are born, they’re cared for in one
of two places—the
Newborn Nursery or our Neonatal ICU. The Newborn Nursery receives nearly
13,500 newborns a year, while the 98-bed Neonatal ICU cares for approximately
1,100 per year. Both units utilize an interdisciplinary approach to infant
care, and both will provide you with experiences you won’t find
anywhere else.
Postpartum
Postpartum units at Parkland admit all normal vaginal delivery patients,
while also caring for women having acute complications before and after
delivery. The care of the low-risk population is managed by Women’s
Health Nurse Practitioners and RNs.
Gyn Oncology
The fast-paced Gyn Oncology unit serves both routine Gyn and Gyn Oncology
patients for surgeries and other gynecological procedures. The supportive,
caring environment gives you plenty of opportunities to teach patients
and their families, and to develop strong clinical skills.
OB/Gyn Clinics
The OB Complications Clinic sees mainly obstetrical cases involving difficult
pregnancies, genetic complications, or gestational diabetes. The Gyn
Clinics concentrate on routine and surgical Gyn follow-up, dysplasia,
and oncology. In these clinics you’ll participate in diagnostic
and therapeutic modalities including patient assessment, cryosurgery,
laser surgery, sonography, aminocentesis, chorionicvilli sampling, cervical
biopsies, and patient education.
OB/Gyn intermediate Care Center
The Parkland OB/Gyn Intermediate Care Center cares for women with acute
OB/Gyn emergencies ranging from ectopic pregnancies to complications
during the first and second trimester of pregnancy. The Center sees close
to 3,000 high-risk patients a month, so you’ll be challenged to
use all your skills and knowledge. You’ll get the opportunity to
do crisis intervention for victims of sexual assault and assist with
evidence collection for prosecution. You can also be a part of research
projects impacting women’s health issues.
